611's whistle location

I really cannot comment on reasons for moving the whistle around on 611.

Regarding the coal boards, remember, 611 was returned to Roanoke under steam, December 7, 1994. She had her fire dropped at Shaffers Crossing, and members of the steam crew put her away for storage. The hope of any number of us were that she would run again, and the coal boards make it a lot easier to deal with in today's operation. I agree with they do not help the streamline effect, but the time and effort to remove them for display was probably deemed to great for the time allotted. Remember, they were working to shut down the program fast, not make things presentable.

According to N&W Drawing E-37859, the location was between truss #13 and #14, at cowling section #12. It was piped directly to the left side of the turret. There can be some confusion regarding the whistle’s location because the low water alarm, mounted on the right side of the boiler center line near the steam dome, may resemble a whistle at a quick glance. There are very few photos of the top side of a J, which limits photographic verification.

In 1982 during 611's return to service, it was moved from the turret to a location at cowling section #7 (above the third driving axle on the left side). According to Robert Yuill, General Foreman of Norfolk Southern’s Steam Shop, it was connected to the external dry pipe supplying the turret. In 1990-1991, it was returned to its original location on the turret.

In my opinion, the whistle on the steam dome would make things easier on the crew's ears. Does anyone know why NS returned the whistle to the original location and why were 611's extended coal boards retained when she returned to the VMT in 1995. In my opinion the detract from 611's streamlining, but I understand that they extended 611's operating range. Thank you for any assistance.
