Question about the application of Spredlight lens to N&W PL signals

To the best of my knowledge, the first application of CPL signals on the N&W
was on the Cincinnati District, following the disastrous collision of trans
94 and 99 at Sardinia on April 6, 1958. The use of color in the signals was
an effort to make the signal indications more distinguishable -- especially
at long distances -- than with amber position light signals.

As I recall, the collision at Cloverdale in December, 1957, was the result
of a clear signal failure and not the inability of the crew to "read" the
signal.
