During part of the time my dad was Maintenance Superintendent and Assistant Plant Manager of Appalachian Power Company’s Glen Lyn Plant we lived on the hill behind the plant in Glen Lyn and basically between the 2 trestles. The Virginian main line was clearly visible between the 2 cuts leading to and from each bridge and only ~ ¼ mile from our front yard. Likewise from the yard you could see the N&W mainline across the plants switch and the Virginian’s New River trestle. You couldn’t leave town without either crossing the N&W or Virginian mainlines at grade. Living there during that period was a spectacular show. Little wonder I became interested in railroads and railroading……….railroads and especially steam locomotives were also my Dad’s passion.

Thanks for the information about the East river bridge. I am going to try and obtain both of the VGN books by Lloyd Lewis. I can remember as a child riding through the old steel automobile bridge at Glen Lyn in the early 60’s with my parents on the way to our Florida vacations. The VGN Bridge over the New River made quite an impression as well, but I have no remembrance of the East River bridge. I am looking forward to seeing the photos in these books.

See page 64 of West Virginia Railroads Volume 4: Virginian Railway by Lloyd Lewis. The are two photos of the bridge.
It is a TLC publication.

Page 29 of The Virginian Era, also by Mr. Lewis, has one picture of the bridge. This is a 20-year old book and may be hard to find, but the other one is new.

I have been searching for photos of the VGN high trestle crossing the East River and N&W at Glen Lyn. Photos of the New River bridge are numerous, but the trestle must not have been as
popular. What about VGN passenger station photos at Glen Lyn? I have not yet read a copy of H. Reid’s VGN Railway. Might it have some photos I seek? I have been a life-long fan of the N&W which has lead to my newfound interest of the VGN. Thanks for any info. mike beadle
