I would also welcome any discussion on the speed of the train at the time of the wreck (estimated as 53.6 mph by then-Pocahontas Division superintendent P. C. Wingo for the few miles between Devon and Cedar.

According to the timetable then in effect, the maximum authorized speed for passenger trains
Bluefield to Williamson was 50 MPH. There was a 25 MPH limit at Looneys Curve, MP N-445.5,
but west of that, the running was, for the Pocahontas Division, relatively good for five miles. It
abrubtly ended with the 13 degree curve at Cedar. Draw your own conclusions. Harry Bundy
