Charlestown station

The station had been leased out to several tenants over the years. A firm
rebuilding pinball machines used it, then the real damage was done by a
group that blew rice hulls (used to thicken apple sauce)into the building
through a piping system. Finally a leaser from NJ rented it out, and gutted
out all the railroad fixtures for use in other restorations (and sale at
railroadiana meets)

As a final note the siding and tipple track running in back of the station
at Charlestown is also scheduled for retirement.

The insides of the station were a shambles; it was probably a liability
issue, and a property tax issue, as well.

Both the brick and wooden stations at Charlestown were stops during the NWHS

Anyone know the reason for the demolition? It did not appear to be in danger
of falling down on its own.

I was just informed today that apparently NS has demolished the long
unused brick station at Charlestown either yesterday or today, the 8th
of August. It had probably not been used by the railroad since the
1970's or 1980's at any event. Now it is gone.

It almost lasted 100 years, starting out its life in 1914. The much
older and smaller depot sitting across the way should still be there.
