That's a PG that never got roller bearings, and it looks as if the Mexicans may
have removed the AC. At any rate, they have a window open.

There are suggestions some ex-N&W passenger cars went south to Mexico.

There’s another photo that I saw long ago, and printed, but I can’t find it on
the web now. It looks like one of the N&W DE diners with the larger A/C ductwork
on the one end of the roof, like the first Powhatan Arrow diners had (like HW
sleepers ducting). The photo caption was labeled as ex-N&W heavyweight diner.
It’s painted Pullman Green with the railroad name “Mexico” and “Comedor” above
the attendant’s end-side door with car number SCD 3648. There’s other lettering
where the car name would go. From a web search it might be a 44 seat diner named
“MANDIGA”. The photo credit is J. R. Herron, 1998. I can’t find the photo on the
web.

A good many of the lightweights have survived, a few still owned by NS, but most
of the cars used in the steam program have been scattered far and wide. My guess
is that the 1023 & 1024 are long gone; even if they perhaps went into MofW
service after being retired, MofW uses far fewer railroad cars now than in
former times. The 581 & 582 were reportedly scrapped in Saudi Arabia (although
there are a faithful few who refuse to believe it). Jim Brewer may come close to
being able to tell where the survivors are, as he worked up a passenger car
roster several years ago.

Most (if not all) of the 15 PM coaches received the logo in June 1946, as did
the DE diners 1023 & 1024. After delivery of the 1949 train, the logo was
removed from all these cars. The 1949 train, coaches 501 &502, 511 & 512,
531-540, observations 581 & 581 and diners 491 & 492 all were built with the
logo. 581 & 582 apparantly kept it until their retirement in 1958 and subsequent
sale to Saudi Arabia. In time, it was eventually removed from all the other
cars.
