if they lasted that long, why go back to wood?

There was an incident on the old Norfolk Southern regarding
concrete ties -- a car derailed on the 31-mile branch to Lee
Creek (all concrete ties).  One wheel bounced from tie-to-tie
for a mile and a half. The wheel pushed the tie down and forced
the bolts holding the tie plates in place through the tie.  
Because they were prestressed, the concrete ties couldn't be.
salvaged.
When Southern Railway took over the old NS, they replaced the
concete ties with wood ties.  The concrete ties ?  well they ended
up as rip-rap on a bank along the Pamlico River.  So maybe the
Southern faction of NS just isn't acceptable to installing concrete
