IN CITY AND COALFIELD
------
Alarm Was for Practice
Yesterday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock the fire whistle was sounded. Some thought there was a fire, but the failure of the alarm to repeat dispelled doubts on this line. Then others conceived the ideas that the shop force had been cut down to meet the monthly allowance, but the railroad officials disdained any knowledge of such action, saying there is plenty of work now. Finally the fire chief appeared and explained the matter saying the Norfolk and Western firemen asked permission to blow the whistle to call their fire fighting forces out for practice.

[This and an earlier article give the impression that the N&W shop whistle was the fire alarm signal for city fires as well as railroad fires.]

THE GRAHAM DAILY NEWS
------
One Year Since Accident
One year ago today the accident happened at Wilmore in which Roadmaster J. M. Walker lost his life, and W. R. Dawson and J. R. Anderson received serious injuries when a freight train hit the motor car the three railroad men were using in an inspection of the track. Messrs. Dawson and Anderson have about fully recovered from their injuries, and each of them has been looking after their duties as assistant superintendent and master carpenter of the Pocahontas division for the past several months. The accident caused the president of the road to have motor cars withdrawn from the service except those used by signal men.
