The car at Taylors Valley was a camp car. It was taken out of
service in the mid sixties and outfitted with a bunk room at one end
with double bunks to sleep either six or eight, the other room was
equipped with a warm morning stove, a cook stove, refrigerator and a
dining area. The car was usually kept in Bristol and forwarded to the
siding at Taylors Valley each year prior to trout season opening day.
Someone, usually the Roadmaster at Marion, would see that electricity
was hooked up and groceries were stocked and several Officials would
spend the opening days fishing on Laurel Creek.
In those days the local only ran the Abingdon Branch one day a
week, usually on Wednesday as I recall, so the track was safe to use
hi-rail vehicles to access the more secluded fishing holes. It was also
arranged with the Virginia Game and Fisheries people to use a hi-rail
truck to stock the fish.
