BIG MALLET SHIPPED
------
First of Fifteen Ordered by the Norfolk and Western

Roanoke Times- The first of the fifteen Mallet locomotives ordered by the Norfolk and Western was shipped Thursday from the American Locomotive Works at Richmond, and reached Petersburg. Another Mallet was shipped from Richmond yesterday. The remainder of the fifteen ordered will be sent to this city as fast as completed. When the present order is filled, an order for twenty-five will be sent the American Locomotive Works. After being examined the new locomotives will be sent out on a trial before being put to work regularly on the task of pulling the long coal trains from the coal fields to the sea and hauling the "empties" back.

[The 4/17/1912 article in the BDT - posted on the Mailing List four days ago - stated that the Seaboard Air Line refused to transport the "monster" locomotives and that the Atlantic Coast Line had been asked if they would transport the locomotives. Lacking the ACL's cooperation, the locomotives would have been sent over the C&O to Lynchburg. Inasmuch as the current article states that the first locomotive had reached Petersburg, it appears that the ACL agreed to handle the shipments.]
