The only relationship of the current Norfolk Southern to the original is that some portions of the original’s trackage existed within the current Norfolk Southern Corporation’s System from the 1974 acquisition of the original Norfolk Southern by the Southern Railway.

Until the 1974 acquisition, N&W had a movement of utility coal routed N&W-Durham-NS. Shipments
were restricted to 70-ton cars so that NS's Durham Branch with 70# rail and sand ballast could
accomodate the loads. In the 70's, the U.S. Corps of Engineers began construction of a dam on
the Cape Fear River that created Jordan Lake and inundated portions of NS's Durham Branch. The Corps of Engineers built NS a new line above lake level. It was completed after the 1974 merger. Since Southern
also served Durham, the direct connection to the NS main line at Duncan became redundant. Only one
train ever traveled the Corps of Engineers' new route -- an inspection train. Harry Bundy
