THE GRAHAM DAILY NEWS
------
UNDERGROUND CROSSING
------
Definite Decision May be Reached Within the Next Few Days
Graham citizens are becoming anxious as to the prospects of the Norfolk and Western Railway Company putting in the underground crossing near the ice factory. It is reported here that the state highway commission has reached the point in the road work where it is necessary to determine the final grade of the main thoroughfare through the town, and will necessarily have to locate a crossing at this point. It is understood the chances are favorable for the subway crossing to be provided, and a definite decision will be reached, it is said within the next few days. It is believed the car line would have been extended westward some time ago but for the obstacle to be met in crossing the Clinch Valley railroad tracks at the ice plant. This crossing has always been considered a mean one on account of the location being on a sharp curve, and very naturally those citizens residing west of the railroad who have children attending the public school are especially interested in making the place as safe against the danger of accident as possible.
[The underpass was installed at some point in time, and present-day Virginia Ave. passes under the N&W Clinch Valley line there. The car line referred to here was the streetcar line from Bluefield, WV, which terminated at Morton Ave., now South College Ave. Many articles in the newspaper up to this time advocated for the streetcar line to be extended to West Graham, but, among other things, it would have needed to cross the N&W Clinch Valley line at grade. The streetcar line to West Graham was not built until about 1920, and it was built through the underpass.]

New Billing Machine
The Norfolk and Western auditing department has furnished the agent here, Mr. Pile, with an up-to-date Underwood billing machine. These machines are only used at the large shipping points, such as Graham, Columbus and Cincinnati.
[This billing machine put Graham in with some heady company.]
