The photo sounds like it is the "Wreck of No. 3" . This was not at Ellett, but at Ingleside May 24, 1927. At least it is the only wreck I'm familiar with where a steam loco climbed on top of a EL3a. No. 3 overlooked a meet order and left Ingleside and ran headon into Extra 103 East that fatefull day. Check in the back of H. Reid's book in the 'historical chronology" in 1927 for more info. There have been several photos of this wreck, and several versions of songs written about it.

Subject: Wreck at Ellett on Virginian
While in the Ellett convenience store last evening, I saw a picture labeled “Wreck at New Ellett.” A Virginian freight headed by box cab electrics and a steam engine (could not determine if pulling a freight or passenger train but passenger is more likely) had collided head on and the steam engine was resting on top of the first electric box cab at about a 45 degree angle. Many people were standing about but there was little evidence of “emergency” activity.
Does anyone know when this happened (could have been between about 1925 and 1955), why it happened, or anything else about it?
