Double headed J's

LEWIS Newton's message about Eisenhower's campaign train reminds me: When
Nixon's campaign train came through Chillicothe, it was brought into town by
B&O double-headers. As Nixon talked from the observation platform, the B&O
engines were replaced by two N&W class J locomotives, as I recall. The
whole train then turned on the wye south of Chillicothe and came back
through town on the way to Columbus on the N&W.

By the way, the large abandoned Chillicothe Union Depot that served the B&O
and the N&W all those years burned down last night.

I remember my father taking me out of school - second grade - and taking me
to a cut just south of the crossing near the old Starkey station to see the
sight. We were on a rise just above the cut and waited for what seemed a
long time for the train, but it finally came and we saw the J's and the
entire train. It was an impressive sight for me!

For a picture of double headed J's handling Gen. Eisenhower's campaign train

on September 26, 1952, please see RAILS REMEMBERED, Volume 3, p. 664. The
600 and 604 handled the train from Winston-Salem to Roanoke, and the 612 and

613 from Roanoke to Petersburg.

A few days earlier, the 611 and 613 had handled the train from Columbus to
Kenova (p. 666).
