IN CITY AND COALFIELD
------
Virginian Conductor Kills Negro
A negro [sic] was killed on the Winding Gulf branch of the Virginian Saturday by conductor J. H. Kelly. The negro got on the train and wanted to pay his fare in mine scrip and when the conductor refused used some insulting epithets, whereupon the conductor struck him on the head with his gun fracturing his skull. The negro, whose name could not be learned, lived about an hour.

Railroad Men Interested
Among the railroad men there is considerable comment and talk about the report which appeared in Sunday's Daily Telegraph that George P. Johnson, general superintendent of the western division of the Norfolk and Western has been tendered the position of receiver for the Detroit, Toledo and Ironton Railway. It is generally believed that Mr. Johnson will accept the position, although it is known that the rehabilitation of the road will entail a great deal of hard work. Railroad politicians are trying to figure out what changes will be made in case Mr. Johnson leaves here, but outside of dope they have nothing to go on.

Thrown From Motor Car
L. A.Thompson, signal maintainer, and B. H. Maynard, of Matewan, his assistant, were both slightly injured Sunday, when they were thrown from a motor car which jumped a switch at Lick Fork when making about twenty-five miles an hour. Both men were thrown a considerable distance, but fortunately their injuries were very slight, Maynard reporting for duty yesterday morning as though nothing had occurred. Since the accident in which W. R. Dawson, assistant superintendent, and J. W. Anderson were badly injured and Mr. Walker was killed, the motor cars have been taken out of the service except in the cases of signal maintainers and a special class of men whose work makes their use imperative. This is the first accident of the kind in some months.

Fell Under Train.
David McCracken, of Hyler's Gap, Va., fell beneath Clinch Valley No. 85 Sunday morning while trying, to jump from the freight, on which he was stealing a ride. The accident, which occurred at Honaker, was not witnessed by anyone. When found McCracken was unconscious from loss of blood, but his recovery is looked forward to as the limb was so
badly crushed at the ankle that.the blood could not flow freely, to which fact McCracken owes his life.
