IMPROVEMENT SHOWN
------
Real Relief From Coal Car Embargoes Expected to be Felt Soon
Condition at the western terminals of the Norfolk and Western are showing signs of improvement, it being expected that real relief will be felt in a few days. For nearly a week the connecting lines have embargoed against coal from this section due to their inability to handle shipments, resulting from the storms in the northwest and north, which have tied up thousands of cars, ten thousand being tied up in the vicinity of Toledo alone.
The demand for coal during the next three months, especially in view of strike conditions in this country and England, should be very heavy and heavy business is anticipated from now until the first of June. Already, it is reported, the larger railroads are storing coal against a possible Pennsylvania strike, and larger consumers are buying, or considering buying, against an increase in price as a result of strikes here and abroad. This should have a material effect on the Norfolk and Western shipments.
Indications point to the fiscal year of the Norfolk and Western, ending on June 30, being far the biggest year in the history of the road, which during the first seven months of the fiscal year has shipped 12, 631,556 net tons.
