GREENCASTLE, Pa.—
Hykes Road will reopen and Milnor Road close permanently Oct. 26 as part
of ongoing construction for _Norfolk Southern_
(http://www.herald-mail.com/topic/economy-business-finance/norfolk-southern-corporation-ORCRP010911.topic)
’s new $95 million facility in Antrim Township, Pa.

The rail-truck facility aiding in the shipment of containerized freight is
on target to open at the end of 2012, according to Roger Bennett, Norfolk
Southern’s industrial development director.

Bennett addressed the Greencastle-Antrim _Chamber of Commerce_

presentation from April 2010.

Hykes Road was closed Aug. 26 to accommodate the railway’s efforts to make
4 miles worth of improvements on its main line. A Hykes Road overpass will
open in the spring of 2012.

The intermodal facility involves a 200-acre site west of U.S. 11. Someday,
a road will take tractor-trailers directly from Interstate 81’s Exit 3 to
Norfolk Southern’s property.

“We are trying to do a lot of projects simultaneously,” Bennett said,
explaining new Birmingham, Ala., and _Memphis_

County_

Also on tap for Norfolk Southern are projects in _Philadelphia_
(http://www.herald-mail.com/topic/us/pennsylvania/philadelphia-county/philadelphia-(phil
adelphia-pennsylvania)-PLGEO100101023010000.topic) , Harrisburg and other
states that are part of its $2.5 billion Crescent Corridor initiative on the
East Coast.

Bennett explained how partnerships between trucking companies and
railroads allow for transportation of coal and industrial goods in containers. The
Antrim Township intermodal facility is expected to do 85,000 “lifts” a
year, referring to containers being loaded on or off trains.

“Most of the products carried intermodal are things you and I use every
day,” Bennett said, saying _Wal-Mart Stores Inc._
(http://www.herald-mail.com/topic/economy-business-finance/wal-mart-stores-inc.-ORCRP016487.topic) is a
major user of intermodal freight.

An automated gate system will expedite _trucks_

The Crescent Corridor initiative is designed to improve rail transit
times. Norfolk Southern predicts the first phase will take 1 million long-haul
tractor-trailers off the highway, although that could be tempered by growth
in the industry.

Bennett said train hauling is three times _more fuel efficient_

en-in-2012-20111018,0,1976621.story#) than over-the-road transportation.

The state of Pennsylvania committed $40 million to the Antrim Township
rail-truck center, which could employ 126 people when it opens.

Chamber members asked about train speed, double-stack containers, trucking
industry projections and cargo planes.
