John: Yes, these use the big, "square" lantern batteries. Bulbs can be
difficult to find for these lanterns as the common bulb types carried by
stores are for the modern flashlights and lanterns. Go to your oldest
hardware store in your area. The big box hardware retailers carry the
batteries. The big issue with these old lanterns is that the batteries
leaked inside the case and corroded the sliding contacts between the lamps
and the battery contacts. If yours is seriously corroded........... Yes,
they do come apart and sometimes can be cleaned up to function.
These lanterns are not hard to find in shows or auctions. Star and Conger
made them for years. Some of the Stars had a plastic handle. Again the
key is to find one with no or minimal corrosion. The older batteries leaked
readily, especially as they were mounted upside down. Prices can vary but
$10-12 for an unmarked case Star is about right; marked cases can be higher.
Conger's usually go for more as they fold up better and can be put into a
pocket. Marked Congers are uncommon. There are a lot of Congers still in
service on rr's used by old heads who know a good thing when they see it and
use it.

He worked as a Yard Conductor before he retired, but at one time I
understand he was a brakeman. He also had two Adlake lanterns one red
globe and one clear globe.
Woule the flashlight used a 6 volt battery? Both of the bulbs look
intact.
Thanks for the inforation. John Musgrove
