Underground Crossing
Norfolk and Western Engineer James Davenport was here yesterday and met Mayor Sexton and Road Engineer Joseph Wright and went over the ground here where it is proposed to provide an underground crossing under the Clinch valley tracks opposite the factory. Mr. Davenport came here at the suggestion of General Superintendent George P. Johnson, who it is said has expressed a willingness to make a thorough investigation of the premises with a view of meeting the wishes of the citizens of Graham so far as is possible. The crossing is considered a hazardous one on account of being located on a sharp curve. Mr. Sexton on behalf of the town will confer further with the railroad people so as to reach some definite understanding before the road work is begun on that street.

[The attached excerpt of a 1908 Graham map shows Highland Avenue crossing the Clinch Valley line, and is likely the crossing refered to above. There is an underpass there today. Note that pumping station located in the wye. This is obviously the one mentioned in earlier articles that supplied water to Bluefield roundhouse and locomotive servicing facilities. Although the depot was later located inside the wye, in 1912 it was located east of the wye at Spruce Street.]
