Nathan:   You are close to the better spots right now.  The south end of the
C&O bridge in Covington sees most of the traffic going southward/eastward on
the C&O and L&N tracks.

 

Going back across the river over the bridge next to the C&O tracks will take
you to the bottom end of Queensgate if you turn left at the end of that
bridge and you follow your nose and the tracks.  Limited access but you will
be near trackside on public property when near fifth and Baymiller streets.

 

Find Spring Grove Avenue by going to Dalton Street, under the Cinti union
Terminal, and staying on that road until it merges into Spring Grove- you
cannot really go anywhere else- This will take you up to the upper end of
Queensgate and under the double  deck Western Hills Viaduct.  This crosses
Queensgate at the hump tower and diesel facility.  There is a side walk on
the upper deck on the southside of this bridge- quite a vista.  Crossing to
the north side will bring the police looking for the 'suicide jumper'.
Don't do that!

 

NS has its yard at Gest Street which is tucked into the south end of
Queensgate.  You can find Gest Street easily off of Dalton.  You wil go
under two underpasses that are the approach tracks to Gest St Yard.  The big
silver bridge over the Ohio is a good marker too.

 

NS Ludlow Shops is in Ludlow KY west of Covington along KY 8 butted up
against the river.  Used to be easy to access- BUT IS NOT NOW!!!.  There is
some public access nearby on Ludlow Streets.

 

THE BEST SPOT IS TOWER A IN CINCINNATI UNION TERMINAL/CINCINNATI MUSEUM
CENTER.  TOWER A IS BACK BY THE AMTRAK STATION ENTRANCE.  THE CINCINNATI
RAILROAD CLUB HAS THIS OPEN ON THURSDAY NIGHT AND PROBALY FRIDAY NIGHT AS
WELL.  Tower A is run by the Cincinnati Railroad Club.

 

South of Covington downtown is CK Junction where the C&O line splits to go
to Russell or to the L&N Decoursey Yard at Latonia and the wye to get on to
the shortline to Louisville.  Check out the rr hobby store next to the wye
in Latonia.

 

The shortline is very popular for photography and sees decent traffic.  You
will need a map and travel along I-71 and the back roads.

 

The line to Russell sees about 20 trains a day.  It is along KY 8.  Kinda
tough to shoot but there are some good-sih spots by Dayton KY and out to
Silver Grove and the LaFarge drywall plant- used to be C&O Stevens Yard.

 

Just north of Queensgate along Spring Grove is "Ivorydale" the old P&G Plant
which is next to the junction of the NS/NYC track coming down from Sharon
Yard in Sharonville and the ex-PRR tracks from New Castle and Muncie IN.
This is NA tower which still stands along I-75 in graffiti'ed form.  Behind,
west, of Ivorydale is the St. Bernard/Elmwood Place CSX yard which you can
see from Town Ave.  You can follow most of the CSX and NS lines though
little towns through here without too much trouble.

 

North of Cinti a little bit is the village of Glendale, up I-75 to Sharon
Road and west to the village.  Which has a big parking lot next to the
tracks.  All northbound trains CSX and NS go through here as CSX and NS use
directional running.  There is a restaurant with a deck along the tracks
here plus B&O signals.

 

East of here , down one road on 126, is Sharon yard on the NS.  You can
cross the upper yard on Sharon Road and the lower part of the yard on 126
Glendale Milford Road.  Highway 42 above Sharon has some good opportunities.

 

Check out Entertrainment Junction on Tylersville Road if you like vast G
scale layouts.

 

The 'mecca of the north side' is Butler Street in Hamilton Ohio. Go up I-75
to 129 and go west on this to downtown Hamilton.  Turn right on 127 when
going under the underpass.  This is where the the CSX and NS start their
directional running and north trains use the CSX/B&O/CH&D tracks coming up
from Cincinnati and southward trasin split off and go east on to the ex-PRR
Cincinnati-Richmond line going down towards Reading Ohio.  This line joins
the NYC line just south of Sharon Yard at VAUGHN (can be seen from 126
Glendale Milford Road).

 

Just to the north is New River Junction where the NS New Castle District
joins the CSX line and goes on it for about 2 miles down to Butler Street.
