I have read that track gangs would bend rails to fit specific curves - 
even read descriptions of how to do it.  Google Books is great.  Of 
course, modern welded rail is just laid in place and bends to fit the 
location.  Making a quarter mile of rail to fit a location would be 
almost impossible.
