MAKES RECORD RUN

Second Section of No. 1 Gained Two Hours in Fifty-eight Miles

    Train No. 1 arrived in the city about twenty-five minutes late yesterday afternoon, and following it came second section No. 1, which left Roanoke two hours late, with instructions to connect at Bluefield with the first section.  After running fifty-eight miles, the second section caught up with the first section and trailed it from Eggleston to this city, with the result that it arrived here right behind the first section.
    Among the passengers on the second section, which consisted of a combination baggage and the New York-Gary Pullman, were Phillip Goodwill, of Bramwell, who was returning home from Providence, R. I., where he went with his son, Phillip, who has entered Brown University, and Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Beury and family, who returned to Algoma after spending the summer in Pennsylvania and at Atlantic City.  These passenger claim that the only kick they had was that the first section would not get out of their way and let them make some speed to Bluefield.  Capt. Chariton was conductor on the second section, while Albert Hawshaw took up the Pullman tickets.
    A few months ago the second section of No. 1 made a record run to Bluefield by cutting two hours and forty-five minutes off the schedule.

[In the Jan. 1910 Official Guide, No. 1 was an all-stops local from Roanoke to Welch, so without any stops to make, second No. 1 could gain a lot on the scheduled time.]
