There are several ways to know if a whistle came from a N&W locomotive, If it
is a 3 chime Hancock (Passenger Whistle) The N&W made a modification
to them unique to the N&W. The later Hooter single note whistles were all made
in the Roanoke Shops and are very recognizable as N&W Whistles also a lot of
them have N&W cast in the vale steam which can be seen by removing the
valve from the bowl. but not all of them as it was lost in the machining process.
If it is an earlier single note Baldwin whistle it will be stamped with the Baldwin code
which can be identified down to the locomotive it came from. N&W basically only
used 5 1/2 dia.single notes long or short bell and the Hancock's. If it anything else
it probably not an N&W whistle. Drawing are available from the archives for these
whistles. If you have any question you can call me or email me at

Does anyone know anything about an N&W train wreck between Petersburg and Suffolk, probably in the Wakefield or Ivor area? Not recent, but don't know how long ago.

Also, how can you positively identify that a steam whistle came off an N&W engine?

Thanks - H.B. Bryant
