coaling locomotives at Claire Yard question

In regard to coaling stations running parallel to the track. I'd suspect that in the earlier years of the railroad, there were more coaling stations along the way than there were in later years, possibly replacing the earlier wood stops.
I believe a number of earlier stations were built in this manner, styled like a tipple, where the hoppers dumped into pockets and in turn into the tenders. This was prior to the widespread use of concrete as the preferred method.
I know there was one on the Shenandoah Division at Shenandoah, Buena Vista and I want to say Starkey and/or Payne, Norfolk Division, I know of one at Island Yard in Lynchburg.
Further on Gordon's comment, there was also one of the style like his photo at Glade Spring, Virginia. These were gravity fed, the hoppers (or in some cases drop bottom gons) were set out on the hill above the track level, and were drifted down in position over the track.
