DEPOT AT HOCKMAN

Citizens of West End Hopeful Norfolk and Western Will Build

The Citizens of the west end are very hopeful of their efforts to induce the Norfolk and Western to build a depot at Hockman meeting with success. A petition is being circulated among the people out there to make up a collection for the purpose of purchasing a suitable lot from J. F. Dudley to locate the station on, and is meeting with a hearty response. It is said the revenues the road receives from the patrons who would be affected by the new station is considerably more than many of the smaller stations along the road pay. At the present there is not even a train shed provided to protect passengers from the weather while waiting for the arrival of passenger trains.

[As Harry Bundy wrote earlier, Special Instructions in a 1939 Pocahontas Division ETT specified that trains No. 5 and 6 would stop on signal at Hockman.]

Establishing Street Grades

Engineers Wright and Graham have been engaged this week in going over the streets and establishing the lines and grades for the new macadam streets. The engineers ran into a rather difficult problem opposite the signal tower unless the railroad company can be induced to give over a few feet of its right-of-way to the town for street purposes. If such an arrangement can be effected it is proposed by the engineers to build a stone wall along the edge of the street next to the railroad right-of-way in front of the tower.
