Sounds like him. He’s supposed to have told his wife to buy a used car when he got sent to Weller Yard for the first time, “Get a one-owner car”, he said. He came back and looked at the car she’d bought and asked her if it was a one-owner car. She said it was. He said “who was the owner”? She said “Bluefield Cab Company”.

He was reputedly quite a showboat on water skis. At Claytor Lake, he was buzzing around behind a boat and the plan was that he’d be pulled close to the beach, turn loose and drift right up onto the beach. Only trouble was, the driver went too fast, but Dudley turned loose anyhow, went up on the beach and took out about 25 yards of trash cans and picnic tables, a ride that would have killed a lesser man. He got to his feet, nodded to the assembled horrified onlookers, said “that’s all the show for today, folks” and walked off with as much dignity as he could muster.

He was on a mine shifter down on the west end and was put in a middle track to let a time freight by. He came around to the east end and the signal for the eastbound main was clear. The conductor was riding the engine and called the signal “clear”. Dudley said, “hey, you don’t get your choice of those things up there”.

He was supposed to be firing on a Y going west down the river and hollered at his engineer “did that white horse come out over there?” The engineer said “yep, he came out”. Dudley asked “was the man still on him?”

Must be the same guy. Has to be.

Hey, Harry!

You remember Dudley on the Pokey?

EdKing
EdK;
I might add a tale from Guy Kelly. Dudley had
been assigned to the Finney pusher. The
dispatcher issued instructions for Dudley to
push one to Honaker Tunnel, but to remain
there until told to return to Finney. There was
a signal maintainer on a motor car following
and the dispatcher waited for him to report
clear before allowing the pusher to come
down the hill. Dudley pushed to the top, cut
off and started down the hill, forgetting what
the instuctions were. The signal maintainer
heard the pusher returning and was able to
set the motor car in the clear in time to prevent
a collision. Before reaching Finney, Dudley
remembered the instructions, reversed course
to return to Honaker -- and got the signal main-
tainer from the rear. NOW..what was your read
on Dudley ? Harry Bundy
