Crewe-Norfolk Engineer was A. C. "Buddy"
Phelps who was noted by David P. Morgan in a 1959 issue of Trains
magazine as "A Man In A Hurry". Would love to see film if available
for purchase.

Alfred E Baird Jr

Every operating district has one engineer (at least one) thatstands out for one reason or another. On the Norfolk Division'sEast End, it was "Buddy" Phelps. He loved steam locomotives. There'sa practice known as "sharp-shooting" by the operating unions. Itinvolves keeping an eye on the call board, then manipulating youravailability so that you stand to be called for the assgnment you want.So in the 50's as steam runs dwindled, "Buddy" would look to thosejobs with steam power. If necessary, he'd mark off, only to mark backup just in time to catch a steam trip. "Sharp-shooting" is frowned onby union and management, but it worked for "Buddy". Harry Bundy
