VIRGINIAN SEEKS A PLACE FOR SHOPS
------
Salem Would Have Princeton Railway Plant Moved There
Much speculation is heard here as to the ultimate location of the shops of the Virginian railway, now located at Princeton, W. Va., says the Roanoke Times of yesterday. It is admitted generally that the Virginian contemplates moving its shops eastward from the West Virginia town and many people believe that it has its eye on Roanoke as a suitable place for the plant.
A prominent business man of Salem, in the city Thursday, said that people of that town are confident that when the shops are moved from Princeton they will come to Salem. He advanced reasons for his belief and argued to show that the Virginian could do worse than select Salem for such a purpose.
The Virginian has much land on the Roanoke river bottom in Salem, it is pointed out, and would need very little more land for the shops. What more is needed easily could be obtained from the town as soon as the railway makes known its desire to locate its shops there.
Should the Virginian decide to come to Roanoke it would be necessary to get more land than is now owned here but this could be done easily.
It is certain that the business element of Roanoke would welcome the Virginian with open arms and would do everything possible to bring the shops here, once it is known that such action would be welcome to the railroad officials.

[Does anyone know whether there was any credible basis for this rumor?]
