Does any have information on a cab signal system used on the coal hump at Lamberts Point, and know what engines might have been so equipped ?

Abe:
N&W tried to assign the "problem children" at Norfolk Terminal -- there were FM's
and some hybred Alco-Baldwin engines under the care of "Speedy" Bradley.
Bradley had started as an apprentice at Island Yard, but his brother became
Supt.-Transportation for the Southern. The coal hump worked only one shift per
day and was used primarily to bring some order to a car not needed at the
hump,a bad order, a reconsigned car -- in other words, cars that required "one-for-
one" switching. Either the pin-puller or the conductor on the hump sent the signal to
"come ahead, back-up, stop". There was constant radio chatter on Norfolk
Terminal and the cab signal system added some degree of safety. Imagine
hanging on to 25 loads and you're about to make a joint with a standing cut
when you're over-ridden. It's been a long time, but I believe hopper trains
doubling over on "the mty side" used signals controlled by the conductor rather
than radio. Harry Bundy
