There was a railroad that construction was started on prior to the War of Northern Aggression in South Carolina that would have also provided a Southeast to Mid-west connection; the Blue Ridge Railroad. It was completed from Anderson, SC to Walhalla, SC and excavation including some tunnel work was completed beyond Walhalla in the mountains. This railroad was never completed. When the Clinchfield was constructed in the early 1900’s a Southeast to Mid-west route was finally achieved. The Clinchfield goes from Spartanburg, SC where it connects with the Southern and Charleston & Western Carolina(now NS and CSX) to Elkhorn Cit, KY where it connects with the C&O (now CSX as the Clinchfield also became). It also connected with the L&N (now CSX) in SW Virginia.

Itis very desirable that this Extension be completed, and the connection made
with the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railroad as early as practicable, in
order that the line may be in active operation and business developed prior
to the opening of the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The line that
will be formed by your Ohio and North Carolina Extensions will be the
shortest and most direct route between the South Atlantic States and Chicago
and the Northwest.

Aaaah... if only they had added "...and Pacific" to their corporate identity! Had they done so, they would no doubt have been hauling the hottest Limited of the country over a four-track speedway. It's all in the Marketing, ya know.
