Can't see it full-sized.. but it seems like a pole with insulators turned away
rom the track direction.. I can see what looks like "bumps" on the top.

I recently bought a picture of the Rileyville VA N&W station from the
Commissary. See it at:
http://www.nwhs.org/archivesdb/listdocs.php?index=sc&id=3&cid=785? I would
appreciate some idea of the purpose of the pole to the left--looks like a
birdhouse on top!!

some of the 555's were renumbered to 518's. Why?
K I understand the questions. Most 518 cabs in service, (there are still
few N&W 518 still floating around as N&W 518xxx. Example of one is NW
18600 assigned to local service Roanoke to Fieldale and Fieldale to
artinsville locals.) have been re-numbered 555xxx. I know of none 555xxx that
ere
enumbered into 518xxx. Also all 518xxx 500 and 600 series were reworked in
he 1970's into C31P while the 555xxx series was built new as C32P. As to
hy NS did this I could only guess. Probably to get all cabs in one number
eries.

I checked this out and there are some unusual VGN and N&W items in
ddition to the usual lanterns, locks, keys, trust plates,a couple of cast iron
spittoons that I haven't seen before and a brass EL-2 plate.

here is an auction here in Virginia Beach at Barrett Street Auction on the
25th at 4 pm and according to the ad, they have "over 60 railroad
anterns, locks w/ keys, cast iron signs, Sanders motor car for Seaboard
irline
ailroad, Fairmount Speeder (both gas powered), RR documents, locomotive
ell,1872 velocipede". In case anyone is interested, it says you can start
idding now at "icollector.com" and their website is _www.barrettstreet.com_
http://www.barrettstreet.com)

ood Luck!

Yes, that appears to be a birdhouse on top, but I doubt it is the purpose of the
pole.??? Jim Nichols

"Of course the semaphores in front of the depot are the train order boards used
o indicate if a train had to proceed at speed past the depot, no orders, slow
own to hoop up orders ( Form 19's or flimsies) or stop and sign for orders
rarely done). Note the cut on the end of the blades which indicate train order
oards rather that the pointed or square ends used for signals. The operating
ule books tell which is which- 1917's or earlier versions.

Gary,
If that is the case, please explain the square ended blades at the top of
he mast?
