Unfortunately, their eyes should have been open many years ago when the first bulldozer started breaking ground for the interstate highway system!

There was another Norfolk Southern, and 50 years
and 1 day ago, Hurricane Donna demolished 30% of
its Albemarle Sound Trestle. The NS forgot to relieve
the bridge tender at the draw and he had to be taken
off by boat.  From September 14 until Dec. 29,1960,NS
detoured around the sound bridge on the ACL.  At a
time before it was "fashionable" to have women on the
corporate level, NS had one -- Miss Goldie Lane.  NS
wasn't exactly cash rich.  One year, it showed a profit
of $4,400, the same as my earnings.  So to make repairs
to the trestle, NS applied for a federal loan of $2 mil.
Miss Lane was sent to Washington to testify on behalf
of the NS. When called, one panel member told Miss Lane
that his commission wasn't looking for input from 
secretaries.  NS got the $2 mil loan--after the entire
railroad was put up for collateral.    Harry Bundy
