LOSES ONE LEG
------
Howard Payne Falls From Freight Car and Amputation is Necessary
Howard Payne, one of the best known of the local freight brakemen, met with a serious accident yesterday morning at 3:15 o'clock in the local yards, which cost him one of his legs, which was amputated just below the knee at St. Luke's hospital a few minutes after the accident occurred. Payne was attempting to catch a moving train and had seized the grab irons on the side of the car when without any warning they tore loose and he was thrown beneath the car and his leg crushed so badly that an operation was necessary. Yesterday afternoon he was resting easily at the hospital and the chances for his recovery are excellent. Mr. Payne lives at 115* Talbott street and has a large circle of friends in the city. He has frequently acted in the capacity of freight conductor and was in line for promotion for a permanent position when the accident occurred.
*The third digit was blurred on the microfilm. The best interpretation is shown.
