WILL IT LEASE THE NORFOLK AND WESTERN?
------
Columbus Paper Says Advance in Stock is Due to Rumor of Pennsylvania Deal
The Columbus Journal says: "The advance in the stock of the Norfolk and Western railway yesterday from around 99 to 101, is said by local railroad men to be due to the leaking out of the intention of the Pennsylvania to lease the Norfolk and Western, guaranteeing dividends on the stock, and also that the Norfolk and Western will made a bond issue which will be accompanied by valuable rights to the stockholders.
The Pennsylvania already controls the Norfolk and Western and it is said that it now desires to directly operate it, putting Pennsylvania methods in use on the southern road. The lease, if made public, will be of benefit to Columbus, as there is no doubt but that through trains from the lakes to the Atlantic would be operated over the road, using the Sandusky Short Line. For several years there has been talk of the Pennsylvania turning over the Sandusky line to the Norfolk and Western, but there has always been objection on the part of other roads which did not want the Norfolk and Western to get a lake outlet. Now it is said that the Pennsylvania will lease the Norfolk and Western and make it an integral part of its vast system. If this is done Norfolk and Western offices will be consolidated all over this territory as has already been done with the passenger offices here.
