Chuck,

It might be even more interesting to know where the name "Hunkadora" came from.

Abram,

Did your friend Bill happen to mention when that Class M ran on the Lynchburg & Durham?

Curious folks in Bahama would like to know.

Chuck Stewart
Bahama, NC

(For those who "ain't from 'round here", BAHAMA is pronounced bay-hay-ma. The station (and community) was named after the 3 important families in the area in the 1880s; the Ball, Mangum, and Harris families. Before that the area was known as Hunkadora. The name was changed when the L&D RR came thru in 1889-90. The good folks in the community didn't feel that Hunkadora was a dignified name for their new station so they changed it. Probably the Balls, Mangums, and Harris' had something to do with it too.)

1906-hire Norfolk Division Engineman Bill Jennings told me of a similar accident on the Norfolk Division. Bill gave the name "Dee" (or perhaps it was just "D." ???) Stott for the unfortunate individual. Bill said Stott was apparently leaning out the window to see if any of the driver brasses were running hot, and his head was hit by a high-level switch stand. No mention of the location, unfortunately.

Bill claimed to have fired the first Class M to be used on the Lynchburg & Durham. He said that the timbers in the Durmid Tunnel cleaned the whistle off the engine ! Unfortunately, I have no memory of the engine number he gave for this incident (... and Bill always gave engine numbers with every one of his great stories.)
