If you look REAL close you can see that the journal boxes on the T-40 are larger than those on the T-27 but you have to look REAL close. The T-27 used 5 1/2 x 10" journals, as would be used on a 50-ton 4-axle car; the T-40 used 6 x 11" journals as would be used on a 70-ton 4-axle car.

Didn't they also use the T-40 on the 18s? They were good for 315,000 pounds gross weight on the rail . . . The T-27s were good for 253,500.

The 1134 newly displayed down at Portsmouth has T-40s. AFAIK there aren't any T-27s around anywhere.

The short answer to your question is "yes," but the trucks on a 12,000 gallon tender are probably T-27's, which are visualy identical to the T-40. The T-40 could handle heavier weights and was a modification of the T-27 when they started using that dexsign for the 15 and 16,000 gallon tanks.

Subject: Question about T-40 tender trucks

Gentlemen,
I am helping an importer with development of a Class M in O Scale. I have a question about the 6-wheel trucks under the 12,000 gal non-USRA tenders. Are the T-40 trucks the correct 6-wheel trucks for that tender? if not, what are the correct trucks?
Thanks
Joe Giannovario
