CELEBRATE ROAD OPENING
------
North Carolinians Will Make Merry When Southbound is Open to Traffic
Elaborate preparations are being made for the opening of the Winston-Salem South Bound [sic] Railway on December 15th*. Thousands of persons will go to Winston-Salem to take part in the exercises. They will go from all points of North Carolina and a number will go from Roanoke.
All school children of Winston-Salem will assist in the program. There will be three thousand of them.
Also clubs and schools and colleges will keep open house. In the Salem College memorial hall an organ recital will be given.
Souvenir badges will be presented to everybody.
The governor of North Carolina will make the address of welcome from the steps of the Winston-Salem court house.
Stores and factories will spread wide their doors for visitors.
Winston-Salem will be elaborately decorated. Roanoke Times.

*Second numeral is indistinct on microfilm. The best interpretation is shown.

[The Southbound was built as a joint operation of N&W and ACL. The celebrations described in this article are surprising considering that Winston-Salem already had two railroads, N&W and Southern. Maybe it was local pride in the name.]
