COALFIELDS PHONE
------
Norfolk and Western Installing New System Between Bluefield and Gary
The Norfolk and Western is installing a new telephone which will be probably known as "The Coalfields" phone. The new apparatus will take the place of the "Block" phone now in use and the "Howler" 'phone which gives connection with some of the coalfield offices but which has never proven very satisfactory on account of its being attached to the dispatcher's wire.
The coalfield 'phone will run between Bluefield and Gary and will also have connections with all the passing sidings between these points. It is expected that it will relieve the congestion which sometimes occurs in the busy section of the field and will greatly facilitate the movement of trains, as it will connect the train crews with the dispatcher's office and that of the car distributor. The line will be a brand new copper wire and will take the place of the old block wire in use now.

STRUCK BY FREIGHT
One White Man Killed and Another Has Leg Cut Off
Yesterday afternoon about 5:30 an extra freight killed a white man named Gibson and cut a leg off a man named Kurns just west of Davy. Both men were under the influence of liquor and did not pay any attention to repeated blasts of the whistle. The train was making about twenty miles an hour when the men were struck and the engineer thought the men would get off the track in time to escape the oncoming train. Gibson was killed outright.
