TO BUILD ENGINES IN ROANOKE SHOPS

Orders Given for Five Class Ms for Freight Service and Work Has Already Commenced
    Roanoke World:  The World stated exclusively about six months ago that the Norfolk and Western would go into engine building as soon as the necessary machinery and material could be gotten together.
    It is able to state today that work has already commenced on five class M freight engines and as these are completed others will follow.
    The company has received from the Baldwin Locomotive Works two engines of the same class, and has given the order to the shops to build five.
    At present no extra force will be put on for the five engines but the work will be done by the shop mechanics along with their other work.
    The original plan of the management was to build twenty-five engines each year which would necessitate an increase in the shop force.
    The engines which were built in the shops have proven very satisfactory.  In fact, it has been stated that they are better than many of the engines that have been bought for the road.

[These appear to be Class M2, No. 1150--1154, built 1911, CN 182--186.  The construction numbers show that Roanoke Shops and Roanoke Machine Works turned out plenty of engines before these five.]
