IN CITY AND COALFIELD
------
On Lookout for Murderer
------
It was reported in this city about midnight that a man answering the description of the man who killed Conductor M. M. Spence at Roanoke yesterday about noon was seen on a freight train bound for this city. At an early hour no further news of the man had been heard here. He is described as a young man about twenty-five years of age and when last seen was in his shirt sleeves. He wears a slouch hat and has a beard of about two weeks growth. The police here are on the lookout for the man and a close watch is being kept on all incoming freight trains from the east. If the man comes to this city it is more than likely that he will be arrested.
------
Wreck Narrowly Averted
Virginian passenger train No. 13 narrowly escaped being wrecked by a broken rail yesterday morning about 9 o'clock between McCoy and Whitethorn, in Montgomery county. James Elbert, a farmer, who was walking along the track, discovered a broken rail, and remembering that the passenger train would come flying along in a few minutes, ran down the track to meet the train. When it hove to sight he waved to the engineer, who succeeded in stopping his train a few yards from where the broken rail was threatening the passengers with a wreck and perhaps death.
------
Freight Wreck
First Eighty-four, a time freight, double header, pulled in on the side track opposite Borderland tipple (at plant No. 2) at Hatfield on Tuesday evening to clear for No. 16 passenger train. After No. 16 had passed, No. 84 was pulling out at good speed when a break [sic] dropped and wrecked, tearing up considerable track and wrecking ten loaded cars. The crew was Engineer E. Morris, Engineer Chapman, conductor J. Dunn, all of Portsmouth, O. The cars torn up were mostly loaded with steel rails and steel mine cars.
------
Miner Killed by Train
Joseph Galon, a miner, was struck by a train early yesterday morning near Glen Alum and killed. His remains were discovered by a passing crew. The man had been drinking and it is claimed that he was deaf. He is unknown insofar as relatives are concerned, and will probably be buried by the county authorities of Mingo.

Tour of Inspection
The Clinch Valley section foremen arrived in the city last night on train No. 6 and registered at the Altamont. They will leave this morning for the Elkhorn, where they will join the balance of the Pocahontas division section foremen who are making their annual tour of inspection of the Pocahontas division. Today the party will run from Welch to Bluefield, taking in all the branches. They will remain in this city over night and will leave Saturday morning for the Clinch Valley division after which the party will break up and return to their homes, after having completed a tour of the whole division, which has headquarters in this city.
