Check N&W drawing G44246 (Locator NW-G44246) in the Archives portion of the
N&WHS website. This shows that the swing couplers on Class A, J, K2 and K2a
locomotive were pinned directly to the locomotive underframe--no draft gear.
Even though these front couplers were not backed up with draft gears,
engineers could see ahead well enough to make a gentle coupling, plus
whatever car was being coupled to would have a draft gear to provide some
cushioning.
