On 10/7/2009 I posted an article from the 3/22/1910 BDT and an article from the 3/23/1910 BDT, both about the headon collision at Glen Alum on Sunday morning 3/20/1920 involving train 84 (eng. 875) and an extra (eng. 1091 and 404). Two firemen were killed and two engineers were badly injured.

IN CITY AND COALFIELD
------
Narrow Escape From Death
S. C. Combs had a very narrow escape from death yesterday at Glen Alum when a flue burst in the engine on which he was fireman. The escaping steam burned him very badly about the face and arms. Engineer Marshall escaped unharmed. The accident occurred about 6:30 and Combs was brought to this city on train No. 2 which arrived here about noon. He was carried to the Bluefield Sanitarium where his burns were treated.
[This is the second N&W boiler failure reported in as many days. Glen Alum, WV is on the main line between Devon and Wharnclife.]

This also followed a head end collision near Glen Alum on March 22, 1910. That one was train 84 and Extra 1091 with a head end helper. I have no record on the fate of the crew on this one.
