LOSES BOTH LEGS
------
Feared That Accident to Brakeman Sands Will Prove Fatal
L. E. Sands, a brakeman employed by the Norfolk and Western, lost one of his legs yesterday morning when he fell from the top of a car in such a manner that both of his legs were run over. One of the limbs was cut off while the other was so horribly mangled that it had to be amputated at the Bluefield Sanatorium. It is likely that an operation will be performed on the part of the remaining limb today if the patient is strong enough to stand it. Sands was brought to this city on train No. 84 [a freight train] and taken direct to the hospital. He is a married man and his wife lives on Wayne street. Last Sunday he joined the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and in case his accident should prove fatal, as is feared, his wife will be provided for.

[Apparently there was no N&W benefit in case of a fatality, at least none was mentioned, and, of course, no Railroad Retirement benefit because the latter came into effect in the 1930's.]
