Tony: What did they have in them?..................Mmmmmm, passengers?
The Cavalier was the ‘all stops’ train that was predominantly head end mail cars with RPO (sometimes), baggage, coaches, diner and sleeper(s) in heavy weight form. The Pocahontas was the sleeper train with baggage cars, mail cars, and Pullman sleepers, coaches and diner in heavy weights. After late December 1949 the Powhatan Arrow had light weight streamlined cars of the P1, P2, P3, and P4 classes with the P4 being a round end obs car. Heavy weight head end cars were added after the Cavalier was cut back at the end of April 1958.
K-1’s were pre- WWI 4-8-2’s that were the heavy passenger power up to the K-2’s/K-2a’s delivered after WWI. They were used in passenger service and time freight service after that. By WWII time period, the K-1’s didn’t get that many opportunities for passenger runs but held down the time freights and the high-speed local ‘turns’ freights.

Hello Gary I was just wondering about what types were on them, like were they heavy weight types or lite weight and what did they have in them? i wasn't too concerned about the area where they ran. I did however think about the area around or past Roanoke or Crewe . Its just a thought. This basement is calling me to put a model railroad down there. 3 Js need something to haul. I do have another question about K-1s were they passenger lcos or did they do both? tony

Tony: Depends on what year you wish to model for each train. Plus the
consists were not constant as cars were added/subtracted due to business
level changes and routing changes. PLUS, where on the system you wish to
model becomes important as to what was in the consist at that location as
Pullman cars were added or taken off, mail storage cars were added/taken off
and so on.
What do you have in mind? Note that the Powhatan Arrow had P1, P2, P3's and
a P4 lightweight consist with a D1 diner after January 1950 but not for all
that long. Heavyweight head end cars were used west of Williamson after
the Cavalier was cut back and the mail stuff transferred to the Arrow.
TLC's/Tom Dixon's new book on the ARROW is informative.
