Tony, the N&W had "battleship" gons up until about 1953; the Virginian had
some up until the time of the merger in 1959--the N&W had them all off the
roster within approximately 6 months. Most of them were about 43' to 50'
long. With N&W, VGN, C&O there are roughly 15 different classes of these
cars; we can give you a better answer if you can narrow down your request a
bit.

At least three different sources have given us the distinct impression that
"battleship gon" is a railfan/historian term that was very rarely used by
"real" railroaders; one exception is that it appears that the term was used
by N&W men referring to the VGN cars right after the merger.
