How did that work? Did Western Union let N&W use its equipment and lines to
transmit train orders, etc., as well as transmit personal messages for
paying customers?

Hello, Nathan:
N&W telegraph equipment and lines were maintained by Western Union. Most of
the components used were marked "W.U. TEL. CO." and were made by Bunnell or
Western Electric.
