While we are on the point of history, wasn't it on May 31 and June
1,1886 that the railroads of the South, which included the 405-mile
long former AM&O, now the Norfolk & Western Railroad, changed their
gauge from the "Southern" gauge of 5' to the more accommodating 4'
8.5"?

But that was just 123 years ago and oh .... how soon these things are forgotten.
