CUT OUT AS TERMINAL FOR THROUGH FREIGHT
------

Over Hundred Men Now Running Out of Vivian to be Added to Railroad Population of Bluefield

A change in the train crew arrangement of the Norfolk and Western is to go into effect August 5, which will make quite an important addition to the railroad population of Bluefield. Beginning on this date sixteen crews, including about 125 men, will go [on] the run between Bluefield and Williamson. Vivian will be cut out as a terminal for through trains, which arrangement now obtains. Only yard and hill crews will run out of Vivian. The latter are employed for picking up cars for distribution in the coalfields.
The reason assigned for making the change is a reduction in operating expense, which change it is argued will not work a detriment to the hauling efficiency of the road. In fact, practically the same arrangement was in effect a few years ago, and when Vivian was made a terminal point for through freight, a number of trainmen and their families had to move from Bluefield there.
The changing back to the old practice will mean that the through crews now established at Vivian will either have to move to Williamson or Bluefield. The choice between the two places is optional among the men, but in view of the fact that Bluefield is regarded as a much more desirable place of residence, it is understood that practically all of them will come here.
