John: Look at the NKP Historical Society website also see John Rehor's The
Nickel Plate Story or Eric Hirsimaki's The Nickel Plate Era ( I think it is)
that covers NKP power both diesel and steam. Both are long out of print but
you should be able to get a loaner from your library of Rehor's book.
Eric's is a 1985 print and more of a synopsis but has great photos in it. I
definitely WILL NOT sell you my copy of that one.

The Wabash is well covered by Heimburger's WABASH book also of the early
1980's. I haven't looked at the WAB Historical Society's website for some
years but they should still have one.

Briefly, and from memory, so it will have some errors. The NKP had Berks
from #700 to #779 and some nearly identical ones from the W&LE- #800's or
#900's(?). the #700-#779 were S-1, S-2, and S-3's with the S-1 and S-2's
somewhat lighter and equipped with ATC for running into Chicago. S-3's were
Bellevue and east to Buffalo.

Both of these roads were well dieselized before 1964. The WAB bought over
100 F-7's and some Trainmasters in the late 1940's and early 1950's. The
NKP had PA's, RS-3's GP-7's and 9's and RS-11's while still running the last
of the 2-8-4's, some 2-8-2's and 0-8-0's in the mid to late 1950's. The NKP
was making lots of money then and the steam 2-84's were making money for
them until about 1957.

Subject: NKP and Wabash Locomotive list.

I know this is an N&W group, but the roads were bought by N&W. Does anyone
have or know where to look on the internet for a list of steam locomotives
for NKP and Wabash just after their final steam purchases? For Example NKP
had 80 2-8-4's, 30 of this and 40 of that. Not a list of road numbers but
how many and what types of locomotives the railroads had?

Thanks,

John R.
