Sometime after 1923, Kohler became Fieldale.  A 1982
N&W track chart shows the D&W (by then the Carolina &
Northwestern)passing beneath the N&W at Beaver Creek
and state route #667.  It then parallel the Shenandoah
Division on the west side to a point near state route #57
just south of Payne (a railroad name, not a post office).
After the curve west of the Beaver Creek bridge was
the interchange with N&W.  N&W maintained a yard
at Payne.  This was the assembly point for various
spurs that served industries around Martinsville.  Prior
to traffic control (circa 1971) Payne had an operator
24/7.
